Ricoh launches 60V Voltage Regulators for use in new 48V automotive battery applications

Amstelveen, the Netherlands, 20 October 2017 – Ricoh Europe (Netherlands) B.V. Semiconductor Support Centre has today announced the launch two new voltage regulators for use in automotive applications powered by a new 48V battery system.
The R1560 and R1561 feature in conventional internal combustion automobiles, as well as hybrid electric and mild hybrid vehicles.

Today’s conventional car battery systems are reaching their limits due a continuously increasing integration level of electronic applications. This has led to strong market demands for power saving solutions. In response to this Ricoh developed the R1560, which has a focus on minimum current consumption (3.0 µA) to save the battery as much as possible. Meanwhile, the R1561 has an excellent transient response performance but consumes 20 µA.

The new R1560 and R1561 are robust devices operating up to 60V and have an absolute maximum rating of 80V; they even tolerate load dump surge peaks up to 90V with duration of less than 200ms. The operating temperature range is from -40°C to 125°C. Connecting the regulator directly to the 48V battery eliminates the need for two-stage conversions resulting in a simple and cost effective solution.

Other key features are an excellent output voltage accuracy of 0.8% (at 25°C) and in combination of a low temperature drift coefficient of typical 100ppm/°C, it makes the device suitable as a high reliable power source.  A number of protection and safety circuits are embedded:
  • Fold-back current limit protection; decreases the output current in case of a short circuit.
  • Thermal protection; disables the voltage regulator in case of an over-temperature event.
  • Overcurrent protection; limits the output current when exceeding a maximum level.

The regulators use a PCB saving HSOP-6J and a high wattage TO-252-5-P2 package and product versions are available for automotive (AEC-Q100 compliant soon) as well as for industrial and consumer quality applications.
