Ricoh Cloud Services AWS Optimisations Drive Sustainability Gains for National Broadband Ireland

Formed in 2019, National Broadband Ireland (NBI) aims to roll out high-speed fibre broadband across rural Ireland. As part of the Irish government’s ambitious National Broadband Plan (NBP), NBI is committed to connecting 1.1 million people, and more than 600,000 homes, farms, businesses, and schools.
Challenge:
Sustainability is integral to NBI’s overall mission. By connecting innovators through the rollout of broadband, NBI aims to create opportunities for progress and the development of solutions to address climate change. This focus on sustainability also extends into the organisation’s IT systems, which run on the AWS cloud. NBI therefore looked to implement best practices to minimise energy usage and carbon emissions.
Solution & Benefits:
As AWS Managed Service Provider to NBI, Ricoh Cloud Services implemented 12 optimisations to improve the environmental performance of the AWS environment. These steps included adjusting job schedules for PowerBI data processing, decommissioning unused sandbox environments and AWS WorkSpaces, and downgrading non-production EBS volumes. Together, the optimisations introduced by Ricoh Cloud Services have enabled NBI to cut resource usage, improve operational efficiency, and reduce overall carbon emissions.
