Ricoh Europe switches lights off. Global Eco Action raises environmental awareness.

Amstelveen, 19th June 2006 — Today Ricoh Europe B.V. the European headquarters of Ricoh Co. Ltd. from Japan, announced its participation in Ricoh’s Global Eco Action Day. Under the motto “OFF & THINK” the company actively advocates an internal awareness program to save energy. On June 21st (from 09.00 AM) to June 22nd (09.00 AM) all employees at the companies within the Ricoh Group are involved in promoting energy saving as contribution to Ricoh’s environmental policies.

“OFF & THINK” is a worldwide internal awareness program for an annual recurring day in which staff is encouraged to think how their actions can contribute to the reduction of energy consumption. At the heart of the program is the message that on this day all staff should think about the environment and put electricity using appliances off whenever possible. 21st  as summer solstice day has been selected, to be the first Ricoh Global Eco Action day.

“The effect of individual actions to save energy may be small,” says Masamichi Oishi, Assistant General Manager, Environmental Management Office at Ricoh Europe B.V. ”However small an action may be, if all 76,100 employees of the Ricoh Group around the world join forces for one day, a considerable contribution is made. This contribution is a further step to promote personal thinking about the environment.”

347 Ricoh Group companies contribute to the Global Eco Action day by reducing electricity consumption worldwide. Switching off lights and electric appliances wherever possible during daytime is one of the concrete actions. Another one is switching off all advertising signs at corporate offices and other locations for one day. At all European operations of the Ricoh Group, employees are motivated to contribute by own actions.

Environmental management is a vital issue for Ricoh. All its Group Companies are ISO 14000 accredited. In R&D and production much attention is given to the environmental impact. Furthermore, the company is the recipient of many coveted environment awards, such as the WEC Gold Medal for Environmental Achievement. As the first major Japanese company Ricoh subscribed to “e-mission55.”
