|
| | Amstelveen, The Netherlands, August, 2005 -- Ricoh Europe B.V., the European Headquarters of Ricoh Company Ltd., Tokyo, announces the launch of the R5314DxxxC single chip Power Management System Device. It is an efficient tiny single chip solution providing seven individual supply voltages to various circuits of the application. |
R5314DxxxC is designed for cellular handsets as well as for other portable systems that require intelligent power management. These applications need a number of voltage regulators in order to provide power to all respective circuits with individual supply voltage requirements. In general, power management solutions attempt to minimize power consumption by powering down circuits of the application that are not currently in active use. Effective power management, in today’s cellular handsets for example, is required because of the increased number of additional features like a photo/video camera, media player, voice recorder, organiser, office and wireless functions etc. That way, the same battery life and even the same battery size can be maintained. The R5314DxxxC has features to support three operational modes for the application, such as:
• On Mode: the application is active and requires high power/performance for full operation.
• Sleep Mode: the application is active but requires low power for limited operation.
• Off Mode: the application is not active and requires minimum power consumption.
The 3-mode step-down DCDC Converter integrates a unique parallel circuit of a DCDC Converter and LDO providing significant benefits of both parts, efficient power conversion by the DCDC Converter in high power mode and low noise/low current consumption in low power mode (also called ECO mode). Individual output voltage settings for both parts are possible in order to support features of new advanced processor types. A set of four Low Noise LDOs are 3-mode types as well with a fast transient mode for high performance and low power mode for low current consumption, mainly used for noise critical parts of the application. Another set of two Low Power LDOs are 2-mode types without ECO mode, used for circuits that are always active or do not require high power/high performance. By disabling the regulators, one obtains a minimum current consumption. A 3-wire serial interface controls all regulator modes by one circuit and offers various power saving mode combinations. Integrated over-current and thermal protection circuits are available for enhanced safety of application and user since today’s batteries are very powerful and contain a large volume of energy. The single chip power management IC in a tiny 20 pins QFN0404 package provides efficient use of area on complex high-density printed circuit boards.
