Ricoh Launches the Intelligent Barcode & OCR Package

Amstelveen, The Netherlands, December 2003 -- Ricoh Europe B.V., a leading manufacturer of digital systems for high volume and workgroup printing, today announced the availability of the Intelligent Barcode and OCR Package. The Intelligent Barcode and OCR Package delivers an embedded barcode solution to the SAP R/3 user.

The Intelligent Barcode & OCR Package enables the full use of Ricoh multifunctional products' built-in printing capabilities, such as paper tray selection, double-sided printing, stapling and hole punching, in SAP R/3 environments. This intelligent barcode solution optimises the return on investment by delivering a centralised management and full support for most of the barcodes in use today.

Installing, monitoring and maintaining the Intelligent Barcode & OCR Package printing solution can be done from one remote workstation for all MFPs that need barcode and OCR printing functionality. The results are great time savings and maximum efficiency.

Once installed, the Intelligent Barcode & OCR Package becomes part of the internal architecture of a Ricoh Aficio™ MFP. As a result, a continuous check of every MFP for the latest version of the package is unnecessary. Instead, administrators can manage and monitor the license and usage status of the solution the same way as they manage the MFP itself.

"The Intelligent Barcode & OCR Package improves the customer's workflow by delivering central management and support for the most common barcodes used in various vertical industries like the manufacturing and retail industry, financial and government institutions, and the banking industry," says Naoki Yoshida, Printing Solution Executive at Ricoh Europe B.V. "We will also add support in the future for PDF417, a 2D barcode that is rapidly becoming popular in environments where official documents must be handled and managed efficiently, such as agreements and insurance policies."

The Intelligent Barcode & OCR Package comes with full support for barcodes like EAN13, Interleave 2 of 5, Code 128, Code 39 and others that are most often used in manufacturing and retail industries. The addition of the 2D barcode PDF417 will further improve the efficiency and effectiveness of Ricoh MFPs in various non-manufacturing industries.

The Intelligent Barcode & OCR Package comes in two modes: a demo mode and a licensed mode. This allows the customer to try the package before buying a license for each MFP or laser printer. The demo mode will print a "DEMO" watermark underneath the generated barcode. When the customer has determined that the Intelligent Barcode & OCR Package will fulfil his needs, he can easily obtain a license for any number of MFPs. Using the included utility software tool, called the "Config Tool", he can remotely, and from one central workstation, install and manage all of the licenses on MFPs throughout his organisation.

More features will be added by Ricoh in the future. PDF417 Support and Ricoh's SAP Device Type for Intelligent Barcode & OCR Package are planned for release in the first quarter of next year.
