Amstelveen, the Netherlands, October 2010 – Ricoh Europe (Netherlands) B.V. Semiconductor Support Centre, has launched the R1191 with an advanced three-mode operation and reverse current protection.

Ricoh has expanded its portfolio for voltage regulators with the R1191 for use within a medium operating voltage.

In addition to the Chip Enabled (CE) pin, a new ECO pin has been added for selecting between three different operating modes. This feature is particularly suited to many modern applications with smart power management. The three operating modes are:
  1. ON Mode: LDO is active in optimum performance mode with fast transient response
  2. SLEEP Mode: (reducing current consumption by 88%) – the LDO is active in low current consumption mode, important for long battery life
  3. OFF Mode: LDO is shut down and has minimum power consumption By using the three-mode feature the LDO’s performance and current consumption can be controlled, based on the actual need of the application.
The R1191 contains a reverse current protection circuit that prevents a backward current flow through the LDO, with Ricoh’s enhanced solution addressing two different issues. First, it can block a reverse current flow through the LDO driver transistor (from output to input), preventing any possible damage to the LDO driver caused by a reverse current. It can also block a reverse current flow through the feedback resistors (from output to ground), with a maximum reverse current leakage of 100nA.

An embedded fold-back current limit circuit decreases the output current in the case of a short circuit on the output to approximately 50mA, protecting the LDO and other electronic parts of the application from damage. It also includes thermal protection, with an internal sensor to detect operating temperature. In the event that the temperature reaches 150°C, the regulator will shut down to prevent further overheating.

An auto-discharge function is an optional feature. It discharges the output capacitor quickly through an additional transistor connected between the regulator output and ground which is turned on once the LDO is disabled by the CE pin.

For stable operation, small ceramic capacitors with low ESR and a minimum value of 4.7µF can be used.

The R1191 is available in three different packages, based on required heat dissipation specifications with a selection of SOT89-5, HSOP-6J and TO252-5-P2. The regulator can be used in power supplies for various applications including (digital) home appliances, audio visual equipment and multi-cell battery operated applications.
