It is the third time Ricoh has promoted the initiative to its employees, taking advantage of the opportunity to raise environmental awareness and emphasize its ongoing commitment to its sustainability management programme. So far, over 28,000 employees in 24 countries have participated each year. The reduction of CO2 emissions from these three days alone totals over 13,500 kg.
Additional actions on the 5 June will see Ricoh Group companies turn off the lights at major facilities and billboards. Individual employees are encouraged to “Think & Act”, turning off lights and electrical appliances wherever possible at the office and at home. Many employees will chose to walk to work or travel by public transport and bicycle instead of using their cars. The use of elevators will be reduced and Ricoh’s internal recycling schemes will be further promoted to ensure all employees are engaged in its environmental activities.
While the World Environment Day presents Ricoh with a timely opportunity for additional internal promotion, sustainable actions are completed on a daily basis across the Ricoh Group. The company aims to reduce its CO2 emissions by 1% per employee every year and has been successfully achieving this goal for four years. The global target is to reduce total greenhouse gas emissions by 10% by 2010 compared to 1995 figures
In addition to its ISO 14001 certifications, Ricoh has implemented environmental plans into its Research and Development, product design, procurement, manufacturing, transportation, marketing, maintenance and services operations.
Shiro Kondo, President and Chief Executive Officer at Ricoh says, “We have incorporated environmental viewpoints into every aspect of management and introduced activities conducted by all employees in all our divisions, including not only development and manufacturing, but also planning and sales divisions at both our domestic and overseas sites. In the future, we will contribute to reducing our environmental impact, not only in the business fields in which we are currently engaged, but also in society as a whole, by promoting the development of environmental technologies even more extensively. In this way, we will contribute to changing society for the better.”
