Ricoh and Sun Microsystems Announce Winner of the ‘Ricoh & the Sun Java™ Platform – Powered by U! - Programming Contest 2007’

Amstelveen, the Netherlands, 15th of May 2007 -- Ricoh Europe and Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced the outcome of the third European ‘Ricoh & the Sun Java™ Platform – Powered by U! - Programming Contest’. Ricoh and co-sponsor Sun Microsystems once again challenged young developers to pioneer Java™ technology-based applications for Ricoh’s Aficio™ multifunctional products and laser printers. This year’s winning application, ‘Get & Print’, was developed by Cyril Joui and Zoul Akhdar from the SUPINFO International Institute of Information Technology.

The European Final of the Java™ Programming Contest 2007 took place on April 19th and 20th at the Sun Microsystems development centre in Prague, Czech Republic. On April 19th, the students, their supporting professors and industry leading keynote speakers participated in the ‘Technology Round Table Conference’. The conference focused on topics such as the collaboration between corporations, universities and research institutes and the role of technology with this. On Friday, the national winners from the 6 participating countries – France, Netherlands, Russia, Italy, Norway and Spain – as well as the two ‘wild card’ winners from Germany presented their Java™ applications to the audience.

Cyril Joui and Zoul Akhdar, both students of the SUPINFO institute near Paris, France, were crowned as the winners. Cyril & Zoul have been invited by Sun and Ricoh to attend the prestigious JavaOne 2007 Conference in San Francisco, US. At the conference, their winning application will be shown at the Ricoh booth and the Sun Java Pavilion.

This year’s winning application is a very exciting MFP-centric software solution. The main objective of the solution is simple: ‘Get & Print’ offers a single, universal access point where a knowledge worker is able to view his/her documents (in any format) and print, send or fax regardless of the data repository used (like mail, samba share, ftp server or custom database). Included in the service are advanced search, scheduling and auto-forward functions. In short, the end-user no longer has to worry about the technology used to store and retrieve their digital documents and will have access from any enabled MFP.

"Sun is focused on helping to bridge the digital divide through technology and education.  The Powered by U! Programming Contest is an excellent platform for students to showcase their creativity and knowledge of Java™ technology,” said Mark Herring, senior director of Java Brand Marketing, Sun Microsystems. “We look forward to welcoming this year's winners at the 2007 JavaOneSM Conference in San Francisco.”

Olivier Corgeron, the supervising professor from the winning university commented: “For any student, business projects like these provide a great opportunity to gain invaluable experience in terms of technical execution and perfection, but also in terms of product marketing, presentation skills and documentation, which are not always integrated in computer development studies. The ‘Ricoh & the Sun Java™ Platform Powered by U!’ contest is exactly the type of initiative that is needed by the students.”
